Former Kent cricketer Paul Farbrace has been injured in an attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team in Pakistan.

The 41-year-old ex-wicketkeeper and academy director, who lives at Harrietsham, near Maidstone, was one of six people hurt after gunmen opened fire on the team coach close to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Farbrace, Sri Lanka's assistant coach, suffered a shrapnel wound to his right arm and has been detained in hospital for treatment.

Kent cricket manager Simon Willis said: "I spoke to Paul earlier this morning and he described it as a very terrifying experience, and he is very shaken and shocked."

Five players, including star batsman Thilan Samaraweera, are also thought to have been injured in the attack. The coach driver and five police officers were killed.

A Pakistan umpire is also reported to have been seriously hurt.

Farbrace originally comes from Ash, near Canterbury.

His brother Colin lives at Woodnesborough, near Sandwich. He said: "Paul rang me this morning to say he had an arm injury but otherwise he was okay.

"We only had time for a very brief conversation because he was being taken to a military base where he and the rest of the squad were going to be flown back to Colombo."

Farbrace was appointed in July 2007 and has also coached the England Women and Under-19 squads.
