More than 400 fake Olympic vests have been seized at the Port of Dover.

Thousands of counterfeit products that criminal gangs have tried to smuggle into the country have been stopped at ports and airports across the UK.

The biggest haul came at the Port of Felixstowe where more than 7,000 fake Olympic gym bags were seized by Border Force officers. Over five hundred Olympic branded cigarette lighters were also uncovered.

Chris Townsend, LOCOG commercial director, said: "Fake products not only undermine our ability to raise the revenues needed to stage and host the London 2012 Games, but the fake goods themselves are likely to be of inferior quality and not meet the stringent safety and sustainability standards that all official products must meet."

Officers have used intelligence sources, scanner technology and search techniques to find the fake goods.

Home Office Minister Damian Green said:"Counterfeiting is not a harmless crime but a criminal enterprise posing a serious economic threat estimated to be worth around £1.3 billion in the UK each year."

It is possible to check to see if products are real before purchasing them. All official London 2012 merchandise bears the London 2012 hologram. When tilted from side to side the London 2012 logos should rotate with a 3D effect.
