Explosion and fire in Gordon Promenade area of Gravesend

Dramatic images show the extent of a huge fire that broke out in Gravesend.
The shots show flames leaping into the air at an industrial site in the Gordon Promenade area of the town.
Residents reported an explosion just after 9.30pm on Friday.
Thick black smoke could still be seen for miles around.
One witness said: “There was thick, thick black smoke after one bang, which sounded like an explosion. It’s a massive fire.”
The fire broke out at an industrial yard housing a number of lorries.
Six fire engines were at the scene and people living nearby were urged to keep doors and windows closed.
Crews tackled the flames through the night and into the early hours. A drone was used to help fight the fire.
At 5am today, a fire service spokesman said the blaze was out.
“Firefighting operations at the scene of a fire involving an industrial unit near Gordon Promenade in Gravesend are complete, and the fire has been extinguished,” they said.
“Six fire engines were sent to the scene, as well as a bulk water carrier and the technical rescue unit.
“Crews wearing breathing apparatus used a telehandler machine and hose reel jets to tackle the flames.
“People living near to Gordon Promenade in Gravesend are no longer advised to close windows and doors.
“The cause is not yet known.”
