Flood alerts are in place across Kent after torrential downpours overnight and the prediction of more rain to come.

The ground is likely to have become saturated in several places resulting in the Environment Agency highlighting areas in Ashford and around rural villages on the outskirts of Maidstone.

Land near Rolvenden and Edenbridge on the county's Sussex border was also at risk.

The government departments thinks adverse weather continuing through the weekend will mean alerts will stay in place.

Near Maidstone a large area around the River Beult from Pluckley to Yalding, encompassing Marden, Staplehurst and Headcorn was highlighted.

The Upper River Stour covering a large area of Ashford from Lenham Heath to Westenhanger was also at risk.

As was the River Teise from Lamberhurst to Goudhurst but this flood alert has since been removed along with one in place around Groomsbridge.

Earlier in the week a yellow weather warning was put in place covering the county.

As well as heavy rain snow was initially predicted but the situation later changed.

As off Friday across the UK 171 flood alerts were in place, rising from 124 24 hours earlier — alerts are the third stage of the scale meaning flooding is possible and residents should be prepared.

There are also 133 flood warnings, up from 37 — meaning flooding is likely and immediate action is required. These mainly impact the north east of the country.
