THEY may not be experts in D.I.Y, but Kent’s Floors and Walls are beginning to make some musical waves with their edgy melting pot of rock, street rhymes and hip-hop.

Formed in Margate, the band recently relocated to Brighton where they have signed up with fast-rising independent label South Coast Records. It’s a move that their frontman, Alex Adams appears to be taking very much in his stride as he talks confidently about the release of their debut album.

"It’s a great feeling to have the single and album out soon. We’ve been playing gigs around the country which was a really good experience for me as I’d never really been out of Thanet before," explained the 21 year-old on his replacement mobile, having drowned his previous phone in an impromptu swimming session near his home.

It’s not every bunch of young lads that find themselves courted by record labels, but refreshingly they are not getting too cocky just yet. They know there’s plenty of groundwork to be done in terms of building up a fanbase.

Their full-on sounding single appears to deal with a ruck that they found themselves in while out on the town. Are they the kind of band that regularly square off against hoodies?

"The single does deal with being in a bit of a situation, but we are not troublemakers- it’s just written about things that go on if you’re in a club and someone starts looking at you and think they have a problem with you.

"Fights like that happen everywhere though, not just in Margate. I love the place to bits as it’s my home- and home is definitely where the heart is, " added the amiable young vocalist who got into music as a DJ around the Thanet area.

His hometown gets a strong name-check on their cover of Beastie Boys classic track Sabotage, proving there’s a strong mix of sounds at work with the band’s make-up.

Their varied influences span from a healthy range of tastes in the band including everything from Rage Against the Machine to Radiohead. With any fortune their upcoming Kent gigs will generate some decent reaction from fans and media alike.

"Everything has been great since we’ve been down here. South Coast Records have been a massive help in allowing us to get on with things. I just can’t really describe how much this means to us, to do something we’ve wanted for such a long time."

It appears they have been soaking up the rays on the beach after putting the finishing touches to their album, due in the summer.

When not in work mode they have been taking in some of the city’s wealth of bands and preparing for their home gigs. Unlike certain acts it looks as if they are a pretty tight-knit unit who’ve known each other for years which has helped their cause.

"We are all really good mates and have great fun together. That’s what it’s all about having a laugh and doing what you love with your friends, that makes it all so much better as we get on."
