French keeper Willy Gueret was given a run-out for Gillingham on Monday night at Braintree.

Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler is keen to find an experienced keeper to challenge Ross Flitney for the number one shirt this season.

Gueret, who started last season with MK Dons before moving to Kettering in January, is vastly experienced. He made 135 league starts for the Dons having amassed the same amount with previous club Swansea.

He has now played in England for over a decade and he could be the answer for the Gills, who don’t at present have a full-time goalkeeping coach. Gueret could provide a wealth of knowledge for Flitney and teenage keeper Daren Hawkes.

Young Argentinian keeper Paolo Gazzaniga is also of interest to Hessenthaler, but he is likely to head out on loan if the Gills do a deal for him.

Gueret, who will be 38 years old when the season starts, was one of three trialists in the match at Braintree which finished 1-1.

The keeper was rarely tested after and kept a clean-sheet after coming on in the second half to replace Flitney.

Wide-men Paris Cowan-Hall and Reggie Lambe were both given 45 minutes each in the workout as Hessenthaler gets closer to finalising his plans for the new season.

A goalkeeper and a winger remain targets for the Gills boss.

Monday’s game saw the Gills go behind against the Blue Square Bet Premier newcomers to a Ben Wright goal, following a defensive mix-up between Joe Martin and Callum Davies, before Dennis Oli pounced to level the score,

The Gills are back in action on Tuesday night when they take on League 1 side Leyton Orient at Priestfield. Kick-off is at 7.30pm.

Gills: Flitney (Gueret 46mins), Fuller, (Fish 46mins) Martin (Parter 46mins), Davies (Essam 46mins), Richards (King 46mins), Spiller (Brunt 46mins), Rance (Weston 46mins), Lee (Montrose 46mins), Cowan-Hall (Miller 46mins), Oli (Ford 46mins), Nyafli (Lambe 46mins).
