The e-Golf comes with a 113bhp electric motor that offers 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds and a top speed capped at 88mph, so it has real-world performance similar to the Golf 1.6 TDI model.
For the e-Up, VW has fitted an 81bhp electric motor to deliver 0-62mph in 12.4 seconds and an 81mph top speed, so it has performance very similar to an Up 1.0-litre.
Both of the new electric models from Volkswagen offer zero emissions at the tailpipe and can be recharged to 80% of maximum in 30 minutes. With a full charge, the e-Golf can travel up to 119 miles on a single charge, while the e-Up can manage 100 miles per full charge.
Volkswagen has yet to confirm prices for either the e-Golf or e-Up, but with first deliveries expected early in 2014 prices should be revealed well before the end of the year.
