Visitors have been basking on the sun-kissed Isle of Sheppey on the hottest day of the year.

Kent’s own holiday isle has attracted hundreds to its three Blue Flag beaches.

Among them were Vilma Bakeviciene, 52, on a day trip from East London with her daughter Karolina Bakeviciute, 21, and her friend Lurdita Saiaukaite, also 21.

The trio were sunning themselves near The Leas at Minster watching the jet skiers.

Karolina said: “This is our first time here and it’s lovely. Lurdita saw it on the internet so we thought we’d give it a try. It’s nice and quiet and peaceful and free parking is always a bonus.

“Our other nearest beach is Southend but we try to avoid that. It’s like a human mosh-pit.”

The Met Office said the mercury reached 32.4C (90F) at Heathrow just after midday on Friday, and could climb still further to 34C (93F) for parts of the South East, where the Met Office predicts there could be “the hottest Royal Ascot on record” in Berkshire.

The temperature record for the year has been broken for the third consecutive day, with the previous high of 29.5C (85.1F) recorded at Northolt in west London on Thursday, which surpassed the high of 28.2C (82.76F) recorded at Kew Gardens on Wednesday.
