A procession in Upper Street, Kingsdown, started ahead of
his private funeral.

Hundreds of villagers lined the street
to pay their last respects and gathered outside the church to
listen to the service on a loud speaker.

Members of the British legion were
also present and raised their flags in salute as the funeral
cars arrived.

After the funeral, an RAF Hercules
aircraft flew overhead in tribute.

Sqn Ldr Anthony Downing, a former
Dover Grammar School for Boys student, had been flown home but died
of his injuries the day after at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in
Birmingham, with his family by his side.

His parents, Michael and Masheeda
Downing, live in Kingsdown.
