After such a busy start to the season, we’ve made sure the players are getting some rest this week.
The players have put in a lot of hard work, with eight games in our opening 28 days and this was our first free
midweek since the season started.
I know people say "I could play football all day every day" and yes, we agree but rest is a massive part of being sharp and ready to peak every time the whistle goes.
We all love each other but when you are constantly in each other’s company, it’s good to get away and spend a bit of time with the family. The majority were off on Wednesday but we came back in Thursday recharged.
On Saturday we face a Bristol Rovers team who are sitting toward the bottom of the table, just like Barnet were last week.
But it doesn’t matter who we play, whether they are bottom of the league or Manchester United, we prepare the same. We have spent time watching DVDs of them and have identified their strengths and weaknesses and have a plan of how to beat them.
Because of Rovers’ position, I know what people are thinking and there are assumptions on what will happen.
But not here – we only work on facts. The way we will beat them is by concentrating on what we do well and making sure we perform to the best we can.
If we get a win, or at least a positive result, then that’s brilliant and we keep the points board ticking over.
There is one guarantee – if we do win, we stay top of the league. It’s pleasing to be heading into the game following the win at Barnet. We started the game brightly and from a set-piece, Jack Payne hit a 25-yard strike. It was a great finish. Just 35 seconds later, we scored again.
Our closing down from their kick-off was phenomenal. We showed such desire and work-rate to get the ball back. Not only did we get it back but we showed quality after that with a fantastic forward run from Charlie Allen, who showed great patience and dinked it to Danny Kedwell to score with a great header.
We are looking to stretch these good spells now to ideally have two 45 minutes where we are in total control and that’s utopia for us.
Barnet then had nothing to lose and scored a goal for themselves, which was disappointing as that was from a set-play.
We want to score more from set-plays than we concede and we keep a record of that because it’s where a big percentage of goals are scored from.
Deon Burton scored our third with the back of his head. It was great awareness from him. When we do finishing exercises, we talk about manufacturing the finish and making sure at times you can use any legal part of the body to get the ball going towards goal. Deon proved that adage that the goal never moves.
