Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler was furious with the tackle that left Chris Whelpdale with a sickening injury.
The Gills player needed stitches in a torn testicle after being caught by Crawley's David Hunt during a fiery Boxing Day clash.
"It was shocking challenge and worthy of a red card," said Hessenthaler.
"He has got a horrific injury. He split them (testicles) open believe it or not and it was an absolutely disgusting injury."
Hunt apoligised for the tackle on twitter, saying: "Didn't realise how bad his injury was. Genuinely went for the ball but doesn't make up for what happened."
Whelpdale, who has been bombarded by messages of sympathy, replied: "These things happen, don't worry about it. I'm in good hands, my missus is looking after me."
