Joe Martin became Gillingham’s first signing of the summer on Wednesday and insists he hasn’t joined for mid-table obscurity.
The former Blackpool man, 21, who spent the second half of last season with the Gills on non-contract terms, has penned a two-year deal.
Gillingham’s summer has been rocked following snubs from numerous players, including Adebayo Akinfenwa and Andy Barcham but Martin has confidence in boss Andy Hessenthaler to build a promotion-winning squad.
Martin (pictured) said: "I was feeling my way into the team last season and am happy to be here now for the next couple of years. Hopefully, I’ll get a few games in and next season we’ll get promotion.
"There have been a few goings recently but hopefully now there will be a few comings.
"Whatever the gaffer does, I am sure he will bring good players in and we can push on.
"Next season we need to be aiming for the top three positions, not aiming for the play-offs. Even with the budget cuts, I think we are still capable of making a good push for the top of the league."
