Gillingham defender Matt Lawrence says Saturday's visit to Rotherham will be the biggest indicator of the club’s promotion credentials so far.

The experienced defender, pictured, clocks up his 50th appearance for the Gills this weekend, but knows nothing should be read into the club’s start.

He said: "Things are going well but we are just four league games into the season so I don’t think anyone is getting too carried away with it.

"We have played two young teams in Crewe and Plymouth, who are not playing particularly well at the moment. We will see what happens when we have played the likes of Rotherham and Shrewsbury. That is an indicator of how your season is going.

"The decent teams in the league will probably be Rotherham, Shrewsbury, Oxford and I imagine Crawley will run away with the league – they should do. Those are the teams that will be good and those are the teams you need to compare yourself to."

With so few games played, Lawrence isn’t building Saturday's game up too much.

He said: "Technically, it is a top-of-the-table clash but people love to put labels on things.

"For us it is just another game and another three points. If we lost, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, just as much as it doesn’t mean we are going to get promoted if we win."
