Gillingham are awaiting news of two of their key men ahead of the Shrewsbury trip on Saturday.

Lewis Montrose went to hospital for an x-ray on a suspected broken hand on Tuesday and striker Danny Kedwell is a major doubt with a cracked rib.

Kedwell is almost certain to miss the game at Shrewsbury but Montrose's injury is not so much of a concern to manager Andy Hessenthaler.

Hessenthaler said: "Lewis has picked up an injury in training and will have an x-ray on his hand. He may have cracked a bone but I don't think it's going to stop him being involved in the game."

Simon King was back in training as he eases his way back in after a knee injury.

Kedwell, meanwhile, will be given until the last possible moment to see if he can play, although the Gills boss isn't confident.

"It looks very much like he won't be available for the weekend which is a blow," said Hessenthaler.

The 11-goal striker will be given tablets to help with the pain.

Speaking on Saturday, Kedwell said: "I went up with a header against Jonathan Woodgate. He didn't mean to but he connected with my rib. I thought I had a stitch at first but I couldn't carry on because it was too painful."

The Gills remain in the hunt for Bristol Rovers' Jo Kuffour this week and chairman Paul Scally, who returned to Dubai on Tuesday, will be hoping to thrash out a deal before the weekend.

Kedwell, 28, may not be fit for the weekend but he would relish linking up with Kuffour again.

"I think he is quality and the sort of player who would definitely help us get promoted," said the crocked striker.

"I got used to playing alongside him and we were doing really well together."
