Andy Hessenthaler admitted he felt devastated after his side conceded victory in the fourth minute of injury time at Barnet on Tuesday night.
The Gillingham manager saw his side twice take the lead but on both occasions the hosts hit back to claim a share of the spoils.
Barnet’s late equaliser, to make it 2-2, came after referee James Linington penalised Dennis Oli for a foul. The resulting free-kick ended up at the feet of Izale McLeod, who converted from close range.
“I’m devastated and we all are,” said Hessenthaler. “I don’t think it was a foul but saying that we still have to defend from the free-kick.
“It was a soft one but we had to defend it like we defended it for most of the evening. Right at the death, we didn’t. We switched off and they punished us.
“We looked like we were going to see the game out but the ball was headed across the box and he (McLeod) has got a free shot on goal. We are bitterly disappointed but we have to learn from it.”
The Gills looked to be heading for a third straight win thanks to Jack Payne’s 30-yard effort midway through the second half which made it 2-1.
“Jack scored a goal that was worthy of winning the games for us,” said Hessenthaler. “It’s not an easy place to go to but we know we have thrown two points away.
“We are gutted but we are unbeaten in three, with seven points from nine, and I would have taken that at the beginning of the season.”
