Curtis Weston believes the Gillingham squad are now in a much better shape to deal with League 1 football.

The Gills boosted their hopes of bouncing straight back out of League 2 following Saturday’s 2-0 win over Bradford.

Weston (pictured) was a key player at the weekend, creating the opening goal and scoring the second, and he has backed the team to avoid another basement battle if they get promoted.

He said: "Our team is generally not a League 2 team to be honest.

"I think we are a good, solid League 1 team now and if we do get promoted it will be only right because a lot of our players, if not all of them, are League 1 players.

"If we went up I think we would be fine in League 1. Last season we were unlucky.

"We started on fire and it fizzled out a bit but we are strong enough and have players like me, who have been relegated and promoted, and there is enough experience now in the team to maintain League 1.

"The experience is going to help us this season as we know how good the feeling will be if we get promoted and that makes us want to win these games."

Weston is in great form, with three goals from his last five appearances, and he is enjoying being back on song.

"Scoring goals for me is massive and it gives me loads of confidence to go into the next game," he said.

"I’m playing well and scoring goals at the moment, so it’s going well."
