Luke Rooney continues to be frozen out at Gillingham, but remains high on Swindon manager Paolo Di Canio’s wishlist.

The winger hasn’t played since refusing to sign a contract extension with the Gills but he still has admirers elsewhere.

Di Canio told the Swindon Advertiser: "I love football to be played on the ground and I love players who have the courage to go one against one and beat his opponent.

"Rooney is one of the players in this division who has impressed me, like one or two players from other clubs have too.

"In my opinion Rooney, even if he can sometimes lose discipline, is one player I like but I can’t say much more because I don’t know what his situation is at Gillingham."

No approach was made from Gills’ League 2 rivals before Thursday’s loan deadline, however.

Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler has already laid down the club’s terms and wasn’t willing to comment on the speculation.

"There is no comment on him," he said.
