Barry Fuller believes this season’s Gillingham team have the mental strength to ensure a few bad results do not turn into a crisis.

Last season the Gills failed to get going and the downward spiral left them fighting battles at the wrong end of League 2. It took a dramatic turnaround to ensure the team ended the campaign chasing a play-off position.

Defeats to Rotherham and Shrewsbury in successive games have rocked the optimists but Gills defender Fuller (pictured) has no fears about the team sliding down the table like they did 12 months ago.

"We are a completely different unit now," he said. "You learn from those kind of things. We got off to the start we wanted to this year but obviously the last two haven’t gone our way.

"We have that strong character and belief that we will overcome this. We are not going to sit and dwell on it."

Fuller believes the home crowd can help to reignite their campaign.

He said: "Fans are passionate about the club they support and we are the same. Every player here is passionate about playing for Gillingham Football Club so when we get beat it hurts us as much as the fans."
