A supermarket is bringing traditional glass milk bottles back to the shelves of seven of its Kent stores.

Morrisons is reverting to the traditional packaging as part of a trial to find ways to help both its supermarkets and customers cut plastic waste. Scroll down and take our poll to tell us what you think.

Milk will be sourced direct from local farmers - with the aim of taking out of circulation around 40,000 plastic milk cartons a year.

The pint-sized milk bottles will cost 90p each - a pint of semi-skimmed milk in a plastic carton at Morrisons currently costs 50p while a pint via a round from delivery service Milk & More is 81p and 95p for organic.

The seven Kent stores in Canterbury, Folkestone, Maidstone, Dover, Faversham, Margate and Sittingbourne join a further four Morrisons supermarkets in and around Sheffield in being the first to join the scheme. But the supermarket chain says it is hopeful it will be able to roll out further as other dairies in the country come on-board.

It is also hoped the initiative will contribute to efforts to reduce CO2 emissions as a result of the shorter food miles the milk bottles will need to travel.

The one-pint bottles will be delivered to supermarkets by the dairy farms and once returned by customers will be collected and sanitised to enable them to be re-used, possibly for up to 10 years.

Natasha Cook, packaging manager at Morrisons said: “We want to help our customers live their lives with less plastic. Reusing glass milk bottles is an easy leap for many people to make because they remember that this was how milk used to arrive on the doorstep.

"We’re currently talking to other local dairies and hope to be able to roll out glass milk bottles across the country.”

Morrisons says it has committed to a 50% reduction across its own-brand primary plastic packaging by 2025 with over 83%of Morrisons own-brand plastic packaging is now able to be recycled.

Among the initiatives to have been rolled out in stores is a request for customers to bring their own refillable containers when purchasing meat, fresh fish and items from the supermarket's deli counters.
