Manager Martin Allen hailed his side’s second half performance as “quality” as Gillingham made it three wins out of three with a 2-1 League 2 victory at Dagenham on Saturday.
Deon Burton, his first for the club, and Myles Weston provided the goals - the latter’s second half winner earning the points after Dagenham levelled through Dwight Gayle’s penalty.
Allen (pictured) said: “It is always a tough game coming to Dagenham, everybody knows that, and the rain and thunderstorms made it tough and the pitch skiddy.
“We played some fantastic football, deserved to go ahead, but there are always times here where Dagenham are going to be in the game, because that is the way they play.
“We played with more quality in the second half. What a great goal bv Myles and a great win, a local derby in front of all our supporters, and I think they appreciated that we were weathering some pressure.
“We had to defend their corners and put our bodies on the line, everybody’s done their stint and that certainly does include everybody behind our goal, because the support was magic."
Allen revealed that he had given his squad their first Sunday off for several weeks, to allow them to “chill out” with their families.
He said: “I think it is about time they had time at home, and we gave them an extensive warm-down after the game.
“It’s been ice baths and lots of stretching, eating good food, and I’ll see them on Monday to start preparing for the cup tie against Middlesbrough."
