Helicopter hunt for smash-and-grab jewellery raiders
00:00, 17 March 2008
Robbers pulled up in a car outside a jewellers, jumped out, smashed a window and made off with a haul of items from a display.
The raiders used a pick-axe type tool to smash a front window of Northgate Jewellers, in Northgate, Rochester. Eye-witnesses said a silver Saab pulled up outside the shop just before 2.45pm on Friday with two men wearing balaclavas inside.
Afterwards, the car headed down Rochester High Street towards road. Police scrambled a helicopter to look for the Saab. The getaway vehicle was found dumped a short distance away in Canal Road, Strood.
It is not the first time the shop has been targeted. In October 2004 raiders smashed a window with a scaffold pole, but left empty-handed.
