Eurostar journeys have resumed while high-speed trains in Kent are now running at a reduced service, after a day of travel chaos due to a flooded tunnel.

Southeastern has warned of cancellations and delays today as services recover, following tunnel flooding between Ebbsfleet International and London St Pancras International yesterday.

Eurostar has also announced trains to the continent will resume, while advising travellers of delays and saying stations will be very busy.

New Years Eve plans were disrupted yesterday, as all trains between Ashford and St Pancras, and Gravesend and St Pancras were cancelled.

Giving an update for today, Southeastern said: “Lines have now reopened following flooding between Ebbsfleet International and London St Pancras International.

“Whilst service recovers, trains running between these stations may still be be cancelled, delayed or revised to terminate at Ebbsfleet International. Disruption is expected to continue until the end of the day.

“Flooding has been ongoing in the railway tunnels near Ebbsfleet since Friday morning. One of the two tunnels has now been cleared of water, with work carrying on to clear flood water from the second tunnel.”

In their own statement, Eurostar said: “At least one tunnel can now be used and a full service can operate.

"There will be some speed restrictions in place in the morning which may lead to delays and stations are expected to be very busy."

Yesterday, large crowds were seen at St Pancras, with anxious travellers left in the lurch ahead of the new year festivities.

One disgruntled traveller said she had seen “lots of people crying” at the station as cancellations were revealed.

The flooding was thought to have been caused by a fire control system.

Among those facing travel disruption were a newlywed couple, who told of their “ruined” plans to go to Disneyland in Paris.

Southeastern has provided information on what the reduced service between St Pancras International and Ashford International will look like today.

The rail company says that most trains between Ramsgate and St Pancras via Dover Priory and Canterbury West will run.

Most trains between Ramsgate and St Pancras via Faversham will start and terminate at Ebbsfleet International

If your train terminates or starts at Ebbsfleet International there will be a connecting train to complete travel between St Pancras and Ebbsfleet International.
