Police were taking no chances at Saturday's match between Gillingham and Swindon at Priestfield.

Gillingham was swamped with extra police both on the ground, in the air and on horseback.

Extra officers were drafted in to prevent trouble from flaring up at the crucial match - the two sets of fans have had a fierce rivalry in the past.

A police helicopter hovered over the Sturdee Avenue area of the town as fans went for an early drink in pubs.

Teams of officers escorted away supporters from Gillingahm railway station as they arrived for the game.

The kick-off for the League One game was brought forward to 12.30pm to cut the risk of clashes between fans. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
