A severe weather warning for ice was in place this morning after temperatures plummeted overnight.
Gritters were out in force since 4am but icy patches formed on some untreated surfaces.
The Met Office warning was issued at 7pm yesterday and was in place until 9am today.
A Met Office spokesman said: "Please be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions and slippery surfaces."
Wintry conditions will clear to leave a dry and sunny morning, but there will be a bit more cloud around this afternoon with highs of 6c.
