Jack Evans made his debut for Welling on Tuesday night after heading out of Gillingham on a one month loan.

Evans, who made his only Gills appearance when he came off the bench during October’s win at Torquay, will help aleviate a defensive crisis at Welling.

The defender played 90 minutes for the Blue Square South side in their 1-0 win at Basingstoke.

Boss Andy Hessenthaler is keen to move some of his youngsters on to give them experience.

He said: “He (Evans) is a good player and he had a taste of things in the Torquay game. He will do fine for Welling.

“They are a good non league club and the standard in the Conference South is good. It will make him stronger as a character. He is still a young boy but they will start to grow up if they play in those kind of games.

“I would like to get a few out on loan because we don’t have many reserve games.”

The Gills were forced to call off a planned game against Dagenham on Wednesday, as the bad weather meant the Priestfield pitch was in danger of cutting up, ahead of the game on Saturday.

Along with the young players needing games, Hessenthaler also feels Simon King could benefit from another loan stint. He had a successful spell with Plymouth earlier in the season.

Hessenthaler said: “He could go out on loan if he gets himself fit but he has had a problem with his knee and we just need to get him back up to speed.”
