Kent athletes joined the best in Britain at Birmingham in the Aviva World Trials and UK Championships over the weekend, chasing glory and selection for the World Championships at Daegu, Korea at the end of the month.

Medway & Maidstone AC’s southern sprint champion Andre Wright was second to UK international Marlon Devonish in the 100m heats on Friday night in 10.64 seconds. In the semi-final on Saturday he was seventh in 10.65 to end his campaign.

Montell Douglas of Blackheath & Bromley Harriers progressed to the women’s 100m final finishing fourth (11.54).

Steve Fennell of Tonbridge AC was sixth in the 800m (1.48.91) and Lisa Dobriskey (pictured) of Ashford AC narrowly missed the national title in the 1,500m (4.07.23) behind Hannah England.

Tom Bosworth of Tonbridge AC achieved one of the best performances of the meeting when he broke the UK record to win the 5,000m walk (19.29.87). Rebecca Collins of Medway & Maidstone was fourth in the women’s race (28.02.96).

Lorraine Ugen of Blackheath & Bromley picked up a silver medal in the long jump with a personal best (6.54m) and Kirsty Herbert was fourth in the javelin final (47.27) with team-mate Jo Blair 12th (37.83).
