Kent's roads have been chock-a-block as thousands of people head to the coast on one of the hottest days of the year so far.

Highways officials confirmed traffic is queuing for 20 miles on the M2 coastbound between the Chatham/Rochester turn-off and the Brenley Corner as the temperature is set to reach 32°C.

Travel time on the route is 45 minutes.

Queues started building up at around 10.20am and have continued until after 1pm.

The Met office earlier said temperatures would reach 32°C, making Britain hotter than Ibiza, Mallorca, Spain and the Greek Islands this weekend.

Temperatures will still be a balmy 18C tonight and the hot weather is expected to continue tomorrow.

Kent County Council earlier issued a health warning to urge vulnerable people such as the elderly and very young to stay in the shade and keep cool where they can.
