Scoring the first championship hundred of the new season against Essex at Chelmsford last week was a massive career highlight for me.

It may be difficult to understand that something so good is hard for me to put into words and writing this on Tuesday afternoon, it still hasn’t sunk in.

I got in early after Keysy was out and rode my luck a bit. I ground out the first fifty but played a few more shots after that and looked to take the attack to the bowlers.

I got into the 80s and went from 83 to my 100 in one over off Reece Topley, hitting 2-2-6-4-2-1.

A few edges went through the slip cordon and I played and missed against Maurice Chambers but stuck in there and Cookie and RJ both helped me to boost our total to nearly 250. People have pigeon-holed me as an opener since I replaced Joe Denly when he pulled out of a game a couple of seasons ago and then covered for him when he was away with England.

I batted No.3 for the Second Xl all the time and when I was in Australia this winter, it worked well and I nailed it down. I feel comfortable there and don’t like waiting to bat. Everyone was delighted with the win. I thought Stevo looked two mph quicker than he did last year, Robbie was pleased with the way things went but we mustn’t get too ahead of ourselves with him, and Charlie Shreck coming in, if only for one game, gave us a boost.

Our dressing room was a happy place to be around midday on Monday with Adele’s chart-topper Someone Like You booming out. It’s the Kent team song at the moment and Stevo, who fancies himself as a bit of a DJ, is responsible for that.

I had the chance to play golf at Sunningdale on Tuesday. Nothing serious, just a bit of a hit with a few old friends from school. I don’t really play myself and wasn’t keeping score but it’s a nice way to relax.

Tweeting has become popular among the boys. I like to react and comment on things that happen, rather than be a comedian like Keysy. Simon Willis and Geraint Jones are also avid Tweeters and if you want a flavour of the banter in the changing room, then following the Kent team on twitter is a good way to get that vibe.

We started another four-day game against Northamptonshire on Thursday. There were a few question marks hanging over us after struggling last season, I know it’s only one game but I think we could do well this season.
