There's a stark warning for drink drivers in Kent – your licence could be gone within 90 minutes.

Kent Police are using virtual court technology to put those charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs before magistrates within hours of them sobering up.

Defendants appear via video link and magistrates have the power to ban them from driving with immediate effect.

Last year, the technology was used to bring more than a dozen drink drivers to justice. In one case, a motorist had their licence taken away just 90 minues after being charged.

Deputy Chief Constable Alan Pughsley of Kent Police said: "Usually motorists will be charged with drink driving and bailed to appear before the court some weeks later. This means that until a guilty verdict is reached, they're free to drive.

"The use of the virtual court system means that the defendant risks losing their licence on the day of charge."

- make alternative travel arrangements to get home such as a train or taxi

- don't get into a vehicle with someone you suspect may have been drinking or taking drugs

The warning comes on the day Kent Police launch their seasonal road safety campaign.

Officers will be conducting stop checks across the county in the run up to Christmas, targeting anyone they suspect to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They will also check the safety of vehicles they stop and make sure all passengers are wearing seatbelts.

DCC Pughsley said: "Our message is simple – if you're driving, stay sober and alert or risk losing your licence.

"Before getting behind the wheel, ask yourself whether it's worth it. The consequences of drink driving are severe. You could kill yourself or an innocent party and you risk losing your job and your reputation.

"Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is selfish and anti-social.

"In addition to being banned from driving, you could receive a criminal record and a fine of up to £5,000."
