Summer may technically be over, but that won't stop a mini heatwave from hitting Kent next week.

Temperatures are predicted to reach highs of 27C from Monday as a plume of warm Mediterranean air moves northwards.

Despite remaining warm, the summer months were disappointing for sun worshippers hoping for a long period of scorching temperatures.

Next week's forecast will however be welcome news, as an area of high pressure which has made the weather stagnant begins to drift south towards Europe.

Across Kent, Monday to Wednesday will see thermometer readings remain in the mid 20s.

They will then begin to drop off at the end of the week, and there will be a heightened possibility of rain.

Alex Burkill, a Met Office forecaster, said: “It does look like hot temperatures will start to arrive in the south-east after a disappointing end to the summer.

"August had been particularly grey and dull with cooler temperatures, however it looks like there will be a little blast of summer weather.

“The week will start with temperatures reaching 27C on Monday.

"It’s likely to be dry and sunny for most but this will only be the beginning. Tuesday is likely to be the hottest day, with temperatures probably reaching highs of 28C or even higher before dropping slightly on Wednesday."

The average Kent temperatures for next seven days are:

• Saturday: 20C
• Sunday: 24C
• Monday: 26C
• Tuesday: 26C
• Wednesday: 26C
• Thursday: 23C
• Friday: 22C
