Welling manager Jamie Day tasted defeat away from home for the first time as the Wings lost 3-1 at Lewes on Saturday.

They dropped out of the play-off places as a result and now know that they need to get four wins from their last five matches to break into the top five.

With Day ruled out through injury, Welling gave a full debut to Luke L'Anson but it was a below-par performance from all over the pitch that contributed to their downfall.

There was much debate over whether Dean Cracknell's challenge on Jack Walder warranted a straight red card three minutes before half-time but that only served to mask Welling's shortfalls.

The game should have been dead and buried by half-time, instead the teams went in level. Lewes were ahead on 15 minutes when sloppy defending let in Ross Sutton to cross for Joe Keehan to sidefoot home.

Both Welling full-backs endured a torrid time and it was no surprise that they failed to finish the 90 minutes.

Welling equalised five minutes before half-time when Cracknell was felled by Anthony Barness just as he was about to have a shot on goal. Referee Lymer pointed to the spot but surprisingly only booked Barness for the offence. Lee Clarke tucked away his 13th league goal to make it 1-1.

The visitors failed to improve after the break, two vital Graeme Andrews blocks keeping the scores level until David Wheeler made it 2-1 just before the hour mark.

Lewes were also reduced to 10 men with 16 minutes left when Sutton was given a straight red card for a horrific two-footed lunge on substitute Tom Whitnell.

But any hopes Welling had of nicking an undeserved point ended on 78 minutes when Jack Parkinson's needless foul presented Keehan with the chance to make it 3-1 from the penalty spot.

Bromley left it late to grab a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Bishop's Stortford.

Warren McBean came to the rescue in injury time for the Lillywhites after Ashley Carew and Richard Butler had combined to play him in.

Struggling Bishop's Stortford shocked the hosts after the break as they took the lead on 62 minutes. Scott Shulton found himself in space and on the end of a long throw-in to slot home inside the area.

Bromley responded well after the setback and McBean was denied a goal on 84 minutes for an apparent foul on the keeper. The result keeps Bromley firmly in mid-table in 13th.

Cray Wanderers were denied a hard-earned victory in the Ryman League Premier Division at Billericay, after conceding a stoppage time equaliser.

Leigh Bremner had put the visitors ahead on 59 minutes. Bremner beat the keeper after latching onto a long ball down the middle and hooking the ball past him, before shooting into an empty net.

Billericay snatched a point at the death thanks to Harrison Chatting, who poked the ball into the net after a corner from the right.
