London 2012 Olympics: Kat Driscoll turns thoughts towards reaching final after being named in Games squad
07:00, 06 July 2012
Kat Driscoll has immediately set her sights on making history when she competes at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The 26-year-old trampoline star, who was born in Chatham and grew up in Walderslade, said it was ‘a dream come true’ to be named in Team GB’s gymnastics squad for London 2012 on Wednesday afternoon.
The former Rochester Grammar School for Girls pupil – who learned to trampoline at Lordswood Leapers before moving to Gillingham Jumpers – earned Britain’s sole place in the Games through a series of four GB qualification events earlier this year.
It was fitting that the former world No.1 topped the rankings as it was her qualification for last year’s World Championship final in Birmingham which earned the single place at London 2012.
The former Mid Kent College student – now based in the North East – has already set her sights on a historic performance in the qualifying round of her event at the North Greenwich Arena – as the O2 will be known during the Games – on Saturday, August 4.
She said: "Making the final is my first aim. Trampolining is a fairly new Olympic sport and no British woman has ever done that.
"Only once you make the final then you can start looking at what’s going to happen medal wise.
"It’s great to hear so many people talking about trampolining and it’s great to see everyone supporting you."
She added: "It has been a long selection process for trampoline, so to be able to come out on top and be named part of Team GB is an incredible feeling.
"I’ve dreamt of competing at an Olympic Games since I was a child and continually told my dad that I would be there one day as part of Team GB."
