Pegwell residents protest at the proposed development
Pegwell residents protest at the proposed development

Not in My Back Garden will be the subject for speaker MP Greg Clark at a public meeting on Monday, July 28, in the ongoing fight to save an idyllic Pegwell spot from developers.

Mr Clark will be at St George’s Church Hall in Broad Street, Ramsgate, from 5.30-7pm.

The spotlight is on land off Downs Road and Pegwell Road, Ramsgate, as residents fight to save it from being bricked under a substantial housing scheme.

Time is running out for protestors to have their say as a proposal, described as “planning vandalism,” earmarked for a Pegwell wildlife haven, goes to appeal.

Ward councillor John Kirby is urging opponents to write to the planning inspectorate before August 8 regarding a 26-home scheme earmarked for land off Downs Road and Pegwell Road, Ramsgate.

Lilybrook Developments want to knock down six houses, including two substantial properties and an 1830s barn, to build on an unspoilt back garden area.

The proposal has twice been turned down by Thanet council planners on the grounds of its architectural impact.

As the developers go to appeal, Cllr Kirby is calling for all those against the scheme to make their views known.

Campaigners say the development would “tear the heart out" of the area by cramming homes into a wildlife-rich spot.

They say it would be intrusive and exacerbate traffic problems.

Cllr Kirby said: “This is a very beautiful part of Pegwell, to allow this would be planning vandalism. We would like all residents to write in with their views before August 8.”

Not In My Back Garden has been organised by prospective Conservative parliamentary candidate Laura Sandys.

Mr Clark is calling for a change in the law on garden designation as brownfield sites.

He introduced a private members bill and led a national campaign against “garden grabbing.”
