Manhole cover collapse causes tunnel delays
17:22, 26 February 2009
Drivers faced severe delays in the Medway Tunnel on Thursday afternoon after a manhole cover collapsed.
The Strood-bound carriageway of the tunnel was closed to traffic and the slip road leading to it was closed at Chatham Maritime.
A diversion was in place on Dock Road, diverting motorists to Prince Arthur Road, where they then re-joined the Northern Link Road at the Medway Police Station roundabout.
It was hoped the tunnel would re-open fully later last night when the manhole cover was repaired.
