Maidstone United's Ryman League Premier Division season slumped to a new low after a 1-0 home defeat to fellow strugglers Croydon Athletic on Tuesday night.

The Stones are rock-bottom and effectively nine points from safety after the Rams grabbed the points courtesy of a fifth-minute goal when the Stones defence was unable to deal with a ball over the top.

The result led to the resignation of Stones boss Andy Ford after the game.

Margate are 13 points ahead of the drop-zone after a 2-1 defeat at title-chasing Bury Town.

The hosts took the lead five minutes before the break only for James Pinnock to draw Gate level 11 minutes from time following a Shaun Welford miss.

However the Suffolk side snatched the points in the final minute to hand Gate their eighth away defeat of the season and move within six points of leaders Sutton.

Whitstable Town recovered from a horrendous start but still went down 4-3 at home to Whyeleafe in Ryman League Division 1 South.

Town were 1-0 down inside 15 seconds and it was 2-0 within a minute as the home defence disappeared, however Gareth Cornhill pulled one back before the break.

The hosts gifted the visitors another two goals in five minutes after the interval and despite goals from Ian Pulman and Lloyd Blackman, Town could not find an equaliser.

The Oystermen are two places and six points above the drop-zone with just eight games remaining, but have played two more than the side chasing them.

Ramsgate went down 3-1 at home to leaders Bognor Regis Town to bring an end to their 11-game unbeaten run in 2011.

Warren Schulz put the Rams ahead at Southwood from the penalty spot but the Rocks turned the game on its head with goals from Luke Nightingale and Ben Johnson before Jason Prior sealed the points with a spot-kick, firing in at the second attempt after Rams keeper Jack Smelt blocked his initial effort.
