More recognition for Olympic kayaker

OLYMPIC medallist Ian Wynne had another moment of glory when his council presented him with a framed certificate of achievement.
Ian, who grew up in Hildenborough, won a bronze medal in the Olympic K1 500m kayaking final in Athens on August 28.
And on Tuesday he received a certificate from the Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Cllr Peter Homewood, at a meeting of the full council.
Cllr Homewood said: "I was on holiday when the council organised the open-top bus parade for Kelly Holmes and so I was determined not to miss the opportunity to congratulate Ian on his outstanding achievement."
The sporting hero, who now lives in Guildford, was greeted by rapturous applause by all borough councillors, and was treated to a champagne reception.
He said: "I am really honoured to receive this from the council. started canoeing in Tonbridge on the river, paddling round and round - and it's amazing where you can get to.
"This is such a nice bonus, and such an unexpected side of what I do. You come back down to earth and get on with everyday stuff, then you get invited to something like this and meet people who say 'we saw you, we were really cheering you on'."
Ian went to Hildenborough Church of England School and spent his early years training at clubs in the area, joining Tonbridge Canoe Club when he was nine - although swimming was his first love.
"This is not just recognition for me, but for all the support from my family and my coach and everyone who has helped me," he said.
"It's never just you out there racing - I mean, if it wasn't for my swimming coach when I was younger I would not have a certain approach to training. It's nice to give something back."
Ian's proud parents and his partner were at the meeting, held at the council offices in Kings Hill, to see their son receive his certificate.
