Protesters who climbed onto overhead gantries along the M25 today have warned motorists to expect more disruption.

Just Stop Oil posted a message on social media this evening stating that "the campaign of civil resistance" is not over yet.

At around 7.30am today a number of Just Stop Oil supporters climbed onto overhead gantries on the M25, including one near Godstone.

The motorway was then closed between Junction 6 A22 (Godstone) and Junction 7 M23 in Surrey.

It was also blocked anticlockwise with queueing traffic for two miles at J2 A2 (Darenth Interchange) before the Dartford Tunnel.

Just before 11am National Highways confirmed the scene was clear and all lanes had re-opened in both directions between J9 and J10.

At 9.30am Essex Police and Surrey Police said they had removed protesters and were reopening the road.

It has been confirmed that a female protester who was on a gantry in Dartford has been removed and arrested.

Assistant Chief Constable for local policing, Peter Ayling, tweeted: "My thanks to specialist Kent officers responding swiftly this morning to protester at J1A of M25.

"The female was secured at height making it a tricky operation.

"Despite this, she was quickly arrested for conspiracy to commit a public nuisance with brief lane closure in place."

Kent Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Scott, also praised local officers, saying: "Well done to Kent Police for the swift removal. A difficult position but quickly dealt with."

However it sounds like the protests aren't over just yet – as a warning message was posted on Just Stop Oil's Facebook page this evening.

It states: "Just Stop Oil supporters will continue the campaign of civil resistance on the M25 motorway network in the coming days.

"We ask everyone who is planning to use the M25 or associated roads from 7am tomorrow to be prepared for closures and severe delay to their journeys or to make alternative plans.

"Once again, we urge National Highways to implement a 30mph speed limit across the entire M25 road network in line with their responsibility to keep the public safe.

"To the government we say yet again, what did you expect?"

It goes on to say: "Under British law, we have the legal right, and a moral duty, to disrupt to prevent this great harm – the right of necessity.

"The UK government's policy to allow new North Sea oil and gas results, as the United Nations has pointed out, in there being 'no credible path' to remaining at or below 1.5°C of heating.

"This will result in the collapse of ordered civil society, the loss of our rights and freedoms and the death of countless millions of people.

"We will not stand by and allow this mass murder to happen. We must Just Stop Oil now."

Today’s action follows four weeks of continuous protests by Just Stop Oil – during this time police have made 678 arrests.

Last month campaigners climbed the masts of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, halting traffic for around 42 hours.

Two men were later charged with conspiracy to commit a public nuisance.
