BOSSES of a Rochester nightclub have run into strong opposition from Medway's MP over their plans to open until early on Mondays.

Bob Marshall-Andrews has written to Judith Armitt, Medway Council's s chief executive, to complain about a proposal by Amadeus for late night Sunday opening.

Under the proposals, to go before Medway's licensing panel, tomorrow, the club would open until 2am on Mondays.

At the moment, Amadeus opens from 11am to 3am Mondays to Saturdays, and is only available on Sundays for private functions.

But Mr Marshall-Andrews wrote to the chief executive to point out that residents were worried about vandalism and noise.

He said: "Over the recent months, I have received a considerable amount of items of correspondence, including a copy of a petition from residents living on and adjacent to Cuxton Road, Strood.

"The residents have raised concerns about the dramatic increase in disturbances and criminal damage to property associated with persons using the Amadeus Nightclub."

He added: "I have also received complaints from constituents who have witnessed violent disturbances outside and adjacent to the nightclub.

"Policing matters relating to the operation of this nightclub is on the agenda for discussion at my next meeting with Giles York, Superintendent of Medway Police.

"Can I register my strongest objection to the said application and I urge the council to reject fully the application."

Mr Marshall-Andrews has also passed documents and letters from residents to Chris Webb, the council's licensing officer.

Amadeus, in Medway Valley Leisure Park, is the first in the area to apply for longer hours after the Government amended its policy on Sunday opening last year.

Police have objected because officers are already called to the premises on average 30 times a weekend.
