A groundbreaking ceremony has launched a business park which is expected to create more than 300 jobs.

Canterbury Business Park at Highland Court, Bridge, has already attracted its first tenant with BT signing up for a purpose-built technical and engineering centre. When completed, BT will move its 100-strong workforce from its existing premises in Littlebourne Road, Canterbury.

The park, just off the A2, is a seven-acre scheme by Quinn Estates and Invicta Properties. It will feature a range of units of different sizes, including several for smaller businesses.

Mark Quinn of Quinn Estates, which has invested £1.5 million in the project, said: “It will safeguard 100 jobs in the district and ends the search that BT have had for two years. They have looked all over Kent and this is where they have chosen.

He added that about a third of the scheme was already under offer. “This will kickstart a wave of job creation which we’re really happy about. We think this park will support about 320 jobs.”

He paid tribute to Kent County Council and Canterbury City Council for their support and smoothing the planning process.

Cllr John Gilbey, Canterbury City Council leader, said the excellent access would make the park a real success. The park nestled well into the countryside and the aspect was brilliant. “It’s a really great development,” he said.

Cllr Mark Dance, KCC Cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, said it was a good site for a modern industrial estate. He applauded Mr Quinn for what he was doing. “He is one of the few developers who are taking time to know the potential customers and put it all together. He should carry on creating those jobs and we will back him.”
