A former Kent council boss who left her job with a six-figure pay-off is to take up a similar role with a London borough.

Katherine Kerswell, who left her job as the chief executive of Kent County Council in controversial circumstances in 2012, has been appointed interim chief executive of Newham Council in London.

She left KCC as a result of a reorganisation at County Hall that did away with her post.

It later emerged that her remuneration package for the year she left the post was £589,165 - thought to be one of the largest ever pay packages in local government.

The figure included £420,000 for redundancy - a figure that reflected the number of years in total she had worked in local government.

After leaving KCC, she took up a role as Director General, Civil Service Reform for two years.

Following that, she went on to work for Capita, the UK’s largest business outsourcing organisation running an NHS-based business.

She also created a non-partisan, not-for-profit campaign group aimed at encouraging younger people to become more involved in politics - called ‘45 for the 45th.’
