After another great atmosphere at Priestfield we were left disappointed not to take all three points against Norwich, having had them snatched away in the dying seconds.
It was a competitive match which is what you expect against good sides. Norwich have a big squad, a huge support and a big wage bill and I’m sure they will be up there at the end of the season.
They made it difficult for us in the first half but we hung in and managed to create a couple of chances for ourselves. After a great flick from Jacko, Curtis got clear and was brought down by the keeper giving Jacko the chance to put us ahead. Predictably, he did it without any fuss.
He is calm and full of self-belief when stepping up for spot-kicks and his record is tremendous. It’s not down to luck either. He practices every day and is getting the rewards for that.
That gave us the upper hand going into the second half with a goal and a man advantage. We created enough chances to seal the game but they made it hard for us and kept going which good teams will always do. We feel we didn’t keep the ball well enough, though, which allowed them to put us under some pressure at the end, which we dealt with well until the very last kick.
Needless to say we were disappointed in the dressing room. All that being said, it’s another point and we are still in a healthy position to kick on from.
There was another chance for myself and a few of the boys to keep our fitness levels up this week in a reserve game against Brighton. It was a good work-out and we played some good stuff against an experienced side.
We managed to equalise late on after young Tom Murphy chased a lost cause and got his reward when the keeper missed his kick, giving him a tap-in.
We look forward to a trip to another great stadium to play Southampton on Saturday at St Mary’s – Gillingham’s first visit there.
The pitch will be immaculate and the boys will be buzzing to get out there and play our stuff. We believe we can go there and take all three points.
They are on -1 points and will be desperate to get into positive figures against us but we are determined that won’t happen. It’s not too far of a journey for us which is nice after Tranmere, Walsall and Leeds and we should have a good following again, helping to push us on for a positive result.
Club physio Paul Smith is moving on this week and we wish him all the best.
He’s worked hard while being with us and, apart from his terrible jokes, is a top man too so all the boys wish him good luck.
