Gills players congratulate Andy Barcham on his goal against Millwall

It’s been a fantastic weekend for everyone at The Gills. We were all looking forward to the Millwall game from the start of the season and you could tell how much the boys were relishing the derby by the way we started the game.

Barchy’s strike was something special. I would like to say that he does it all the time in training but he doesn’t! Nevertheless, it wasn’t a surprise, as we all know he has tremendous ability.

Westy followed up for us with a great finish from the edge of the box on his left foot.

I thought he only used that one for standing on but he tucked it away really nicely, or as he would say, lovely!

All the boys were pleased for him as it was against his old club where he started his career so it was great for him.

He had a terrific game and that goal capped it off for him.

I don’t think Millwall were prepared for such a quick start from us. They couldn’t handle it and that set the standard for the 90 minutes. It was an important match for us not just because it was Millwall but also because it turned an okay start to the season into a good one. We are now in a good position to kick on and try to stay as high as we can.

On a personal note, its been frustrating to be warming the bench but while the boys are playing well, there is little I can do about it, except work as hard as I can every day and do well whenever I get the opportunity to play.

I have managed to get some time on the pitch though, once on the wing and briefly on Saturday in middle after Jacko had his eyebrow knocked off! They are obviously not my preferred positions but I enjoyed both appearances and being part of the wins was great.

On to Leeds this weekend and another great game for everyone.

They haven’t lost at home for a long time so what a great incentive for us to go up there and break their record. If we play like we did on Saturday, then we have a great chance of getting a result.

You don’t need motivating for this kind of game and the gaffer will probably have to calm a few of the boys down before we go out. I remember the last game in 07/08 sitting next to Stewy Lew before the game and almost having to put a leash on him!

Obviously that was a disappointing day but it was also the start of a new beginning and the path to where we are now. We go there this time with a different team and a different future ahead of us.

The game sees two of the best strikers in the league playing for opposing teams in Jacko and Jermaine Beckford.

Both will be near the top of the scoring starts this year and hopefully on Saturday we can keep Beckford quiet and Jacko will come out on top in the battle of the goalscorers.

On a negative note we’ve had some bad news on Kingy recently. He will be missing until after Christmas which is obviously a huge blow as he is a big player for us but these things happen and hopefully we can keep things ticking over well until he is back.

On the other hand it’s positive news about Stewy.

He is healing well and will be back training soon and adding even more competition for places in our squad, which is great news as he was excellent toward the end of last season.

Finally, a quick mention for Mr Barcham. He has been promoted to the Champions League of noodle making - Millsy and I welcome you. (If you’re wondering what I’m on about, our lovely cook Jill has been away for a week so we have been bringing in noodles for lunch). Barch’s were terrible to begin with but he has knuckled down and his last three dishes have been worthy of Champions League noodle status.
