Coronavirus Kent: Teynham creative agency Ideas and That design alphabet poster to help explain coronavirus to children

06:00, 07 April 2020

An artistic husband and wife from Kent have designed an alphabet poster for children, using words fast becoming familiar to families during the coronavirus outbreak.

Will Upfield and his wife Amy are behind creative agency Ideas and That, based in Teynham near Sittingbourne.

Keen to put their team's design and creative skills to good use to help explain an ever changing world to youngsters, including their own three-year-old daughter Willow, they have designed the A-Z of coronavirus for kids.

Based on the familiar alphabet posters found in homes, schools and nursery settings around the county, A for apple or B for ball has been replaced with words and phrases that are fast becoming every day language for all families.

Will said: "Since the outbreak of coronavirus, we have been blown away by the kindness and generosity of businesses big and small, doing their bit to help in any way they can at this time of need. As owners of a business ourselves, a creative agency in Kent, as well as parents, we were inspired.

"So we racked our brains and came up with an idea that combined both our superpowers: creating and parenting."

The A-Z of coronavirus for kids includes B for Boris, D for Distancing, H for hands, N for NHS and O for outside.

Alongside each letter and image, is a small child-friendly explanation.

Aware that children are firmly out of routine, Will, a father of two, said the aim was to create something that gently explained the situation, with a focus on the things that matter or that children are likely to notice most.

Time outside, friends, grown-ups, the elderly, school and that all-important hand washing all feature in the new poster.

"This is temporarily life changing. And they are going to notice. So we wanted to find a way of explaining the words that they are going to hear and things we are going to have to do.

"To find the fun, and focus on the positives. And let them know that it won't last forever" he added.

Through the company's website, the A-Z of coronavirus can be printed out in A4 downloads that can be decorated and coloured at home.
