Coronavirus Kent: Police issue fines to people breaking lockdown guidelines

A total of six fines have been issued to people in Kent flouting social distancing guidelines during the Covid-19 outbreak.
It follows new legislation being introduced under the Coronavirus Act giving police the ability to fine or arrest people who fail to comply with the rules.
As part of the new powers, on the spot fines of £60 can be given out.
And only last week Alan Pughsley, chief constable of Kent Police, said fining people will only be used as a last resort in the county.
But six people have now been issued with the penalty.
Assistant chief constable Claire Nix said: "As part of their routine patrolling across the county, Kent Police officers are engaging with individuals and businesses to ensure they are adhering to the government’s instructions around social distancing.
"Officers are engaging with those going against the instructions, explaining why they are necessary and encouraging them to comply, with enforcement being used only as a last resort.
"As of Tuesday, April 7 a total of six fines have been issued.
"I would like to thank the vast majority of people in Kent for continuing to play their part at this difficult time by staying at home, protecting the NHS and saving lives."
Police will not be revealing where the fines were handed out, and for what specific reasons.
As per government guidelines, people are being asked to stay home and only venture out for work, essential shopping or appointments or once-daily exercise close to home.
But over the weekend, perhaps tempted by the warm weather, people were seen out and about across Kent.
In Ashford, people were spotted driving to tennis courts for a match.
While in Folkestone, the council had to issue warnings to people at the beach, including one family who had travelled from Bromley to Hythe.
It comes as a time when the force is depleted by 11% of its work force due to staff absence.
