A MAN who died following a fire in a flat at Sussex Avenue, Margate, at the weekend has been named.
He was Michael Biggs, 32, who was found in the bathroom. He was taken to the town's Queen Mother Hospital but found to be dead on arrival.
The blaze broke out early on Saturday morning. A young couple and their infant son, who lived in a neighbouring flat were led to safety by fire crews.
Fire investigation officer Simon Smith said the fire had started accidentally in clothing in the bedroom and spread to the bedding. He said: “The man who died had locked and bolted himself inside his flat and when the blaze first took hold it seems he was then unable to get out of the building.
"We think he went into the bathroom to escape the fumes and to try to get out of the window but was overcome by smoke before he could escape.”
Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
