Police launch Christmas drink and drug driving campaign with haunting video

Police have released a chilling video to remind people not to drink and drive this Christmas.

More than 200 motorists were arrested for drink or drug driving offences in Kent last December, so police are warning people to be responsible.

The simple yet effective clip sees a car wreckage on its roof, windscreen smashed and most of the metal body destroyed.

An eerie version of Silent Night plays in the background, with shots of a police car and blue lights shown inbetween frames of the other vehicle.

A message about the number of deaths caused by drink and drug driving ends the film.

This is part of a national campaign which will see officers out in force across the county to target reckless drivers.

They will be proactively patrolling and targeting high risk locations, carrying out breath tests, roadside drug swipes and field impairment tests to ensure those who break the law are arrested, charged and put before the courts.

Although drink driving occurs all year round, Christmas can be an especially bad period due to festive celebrations.

So police are urging people to plan ahead before a night out, setting money aside for a taxi home or nominating a driver who will not drink for the evening.

They highlight that it is just not worth the risk of getting behind the wheel when you have alcohol in your system and there is no safe amount when driving.

Sergeant Mark Carron of the Roads Policing Unit said: "We want everyone to go out and enjoy themselves but also act responsibly.

"Our advice is simple, plan ahead. If you are driving, don’t drink.

"Every year, innocent motorists and pedestrians are put at risk from people who think it is acceptable to drive whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs; this campaign is about telling people it is not acceptable.

"We are passionate about changing bad driving behaviour on our roads to protect all those that use them.

"We want all the people of Kent and visitors to the county to have a safe and happy Christmas which is why we don’t make allowances for anyone driving whilst under the influence and why we have these campaigns."
