Power station protest at energy giant's HQ
00:00, 28 January 2008
CLIMATE activists will be protesting outside E.ON headquarters today about the controversial plans to build a new coal-fired power station in Kent.
The German energy giant has attracted the anger of campaigners by lobbying for the building of a new generation of coal fired power stations.
The company recently won the approval of Medway Council to build a new coal-fired station at Kingsnorth, near Hoo, replacing the existing coal station due for decommissioning.
If the application is approved by central Government it will be the first new coal power station built in the UK for 34 years.
The protest is being initiated by the socialist group Revolution and Green Party students at the London School of Economics. It has also won support from the World Development Movement and the Campaign Against Climate Change.
Luke Cooper, from Revolution, said: “We’ve got steady but real momentum building behind this campaign. Fighting on issues like Kingsnorth and the Heathrow expansion will be crucial steps towards building the mass movement we urgently need.”
The protest was due to take place at E.ON’s London offices at 100 Pall Mall today at 3pm. A contingent from London School of Economics will assemble at 2pm.
