Almost 96% of all families applying for primary school places in Kent have got one of their choices, it's been revealed.

And 85% of those who applied were given their first choice of school.

But 660 families have been told their child will not be going to any of the three preferences they chose, according to figures release by Kent County Council today.

Those who applied to schools in the Medway catchment area will have to wait another week before they know if they've got their choice of school.

In total, 15,838 children will go to one of the preferences listed in the application form for KCC. That includes 14,264 who were offered their first preference.

That is a slight increase on last year - with a rise of more than 200 applicants.

Patrick Leeson, KCC corporate director for education, learning and skills, said: “Kent families are seeing the benefit of an excellent year for school admissions.

"Last month, secondary school admissions saw a record number of children getting their first preference.

"The figures for primary schools reflect the efforts and planning that goes into school admissions and our planning for school places."

But he said the council was not complacent about those who were disappointed that they had not got the school of their choice.

He said: "KCC will not lose sight of the fact that 4% of families have not been given a school from their preferences.

"However, many will secure places through waiting lists and primary reallocation. Others may successfully appeal for a school of their choice."

Parents now need to accept their school place offers or seek alternatives if they are not happy with their allocation.
