Row over 'rubbish' mural - but what do you think?
09:54, 15 May 2008
This mural on a Kent town's seafront depicting the beach and local landmarks submerged by litter has been sharply criticised.
The stark picture on the wall of a disused coffee bar by Arlington Arcade, Margate, is the work of acclaimed artist Jimmy Caulty, a former member of iconic dance band and self-styled 'art terrorists' KLF.
It raised the hackles of local councillors from both major political parties and was later defaced by an unknown scrawler with the message This Is Not Art.
But Jessica Baum, curator of the Margate Rocks arts festival, described it as an "excellent and thought-provoking work aimed at raising awareness of ecological issues".
