A power cut in Gillingham meant children at a Medway school got an extra day off today.

The decision was taken after engineers failed to find the cause of the blackout which hit St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Greenfield Road overnight on Tuesday.

A team from EDF spent the early hours trying to find the cause.

About 90 customers - including surrounding homes and businesses - were affected. All supplies were reconnected by 11.17am this morning.

Homes and businesses in the area were also affected by the cut.

A spokesman for EDF Energy said: “Power was interrupted to customers in the Greenfield Road, Ingram Road, Railway Street and Springfield Road area of Gillingham yesterday evening just after 6.30pm.

“EDF Energy Networks staff are on site working to establish the cause of the fault on this part of the underground network, and to restore supplies as quickly and as safely as possible. We appreciate how difficult it is to be without power, especially at this time of year. We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this incident.”

A spokesman for Medway Council added: “St Mary’s Catholic School in Gillingham will be closed today due to a power failure in the Gillingham area surrounding the school. It is hoped that the school will re-open on Thursday."
